EU-report about Terrorist activities
On the 15th December 2003 the council of the European Union published the non-secret part of the report on 'Terrorist activities in the E.U. from October 2002 to October 2003'.
The report, comprising 46 pages, refers to the "terrorist activities" within the E.U., particularly those carried out by groups within the E.U., as well as aspects of" international terrorism" which related to the E.U.
A] 'Terrorist Activities within the E.U.'
The spectrum extends broadly from so-called "separatist terrorism" (ETA, Northern Ireland, Corsica) though an "anarchist terror movement", bio-and cyber-terrorism, to left and right wing terrorism.
It is to be mentioned in relation to Germany that an I.R.A. member, apprehended in Chechnia was extradited to Germany. Michael D. was sentenced to 6 years jail on the 23rd December 03 because he was supposedly part of an attack on a British barracks in the Federal Republic.
Under "leftist terrorism" we find the statement that there at the time had been no relvantly active group, but that there had contantly been "extreme left groups" which had conducted different attacks. Particularly named was the M.G. (militante Gruppe). Investigations by the federal criminal office had uncovered three suspects.
In reference to extreme rightist terrorism the report firmly maintained that there were no indications of such groups, however there were to be observed repeated attacks on Jewish facilities, asylum applicants and foreigners.
The activities of ETA took much space; also mentioned - anonymously - was the arrest of Paulo Elkoros (in connection with him see, too; http://www.intsol.de/paulo) in Nuermberg and his extradition proceedings.
Anarchist "terrorism" would in the view of the E.U. be noticable principally in the south of the E.U., the so-called "Mediteranean anarchist triangle": Greece, Italy, Spain. Mention is made, for example of the letter bombs of the CCCCC (cell against capital, it's prisons, jailers and cells) which operates in Italy; it stands under suspicion of also being responsible for the latest series of letterbomb postings to E.U.parliamentarians.
B] International Terrorism
The report lays emphasis on Islamic fundamentalism, more distantly Kurdish groups, the middle East as well as Iran are mentioned. Connections to Germany were constructed as follows: in March 2003 four Algerians were sentenced for the preparation of a bomb attack; in August Mzondi was put to trial because of his participation in the attack on the World Trade Centre. Germany houses a reservoir of Islamic fighters, who would also be prepared to commit attacks in the Federal Republic.
In the case of the Kurds KADEK/PKK is mentioned, as well as the DHKP-C. It is established that on the 29th July 03 the Turkish parliament approved some sort of amnesty for PKK fighters. In Germany KADEK as well as the DHKP-C command intact structures.
